An Alarming Trend
Eating Disorder Now Common Among Men
Anorexia and bulimia often thought to be “women’s diseases,” are now becoming increasingly common among men. The British Eating Disorders Association estimates that one in 10 people with eating disorders is male.
Later this year The European Council o Eating Disorders will be investigating the reasons behind this trend, but many experts already think they know where the cause lies. It is being blamed on the confusion over male roles in the 1990s. “If a young man of 17, 18, 19 years old in the 1970s could pass his exams, decide on a career and get accepted by his college of choice, he had done all that was required of him and everyone was happy,” says Dr. Jill Welbourne, a leading specialist at Bristol Royal Infirmary. “But now chaps have to be emotionally competent, change nappies and so on, and things are not so clear as they were. There is role confusion, and that is the trigger for anorexia and bulimia.”
